Master of聽Business in Financial Management

HOW TO APPLY

Why did you decide to come to UC?

I chose UC because it provides exactly what I need. I had 10 years of experience in managing my family business but needed to expand my finance skills. UC鈥檚 master鈥檚 programme enabled me to gain entry with my bachelor鈥檚 degree, even though it wasn鈥檛 in business. Also, I want to earn a CFA certification, and completing UC鈥檚 programme allows me to go directly into the exam.

How do you find UC鈥檚 academic staff?鈥

They鈥檙e helpful, compassionate, and empathetic. Even when I was studying online in Indonesia, they created virtual experiences and opportunities, so I was able to get a sense of what things were like in New Zealand. I was still connected, even though we were distanced.聽

What is your favourite thing about your studies at UC?鈥

I love the discussions with the lecturers. I can freely ask about the topic, brainstorm, and talk about my ideas. They鈥檙e very engaging and they love encouraging our learning. When students and lecturers don鈥檛 see eye-to-eye, the lecturers embrace and appreciate the different points of views.聽

What is the support like for international students at UC Business School?鈥

The staff is very helpful, and we always know who to contact or where to go for assistance. Since English is a second language for most of us, the Academic Skills Centre has classes that help us understand and navigate assignments. They also help with adapting to the culture shock.

How do you find life in Christchurch?鈥

Living in Christchurch taught me how to have a balanced lifestyle between my studies, work, and downtime. The people are so nice, welcoming, and very open to international students.聽

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?鈥

I love walking around the city centre and studying at T奴ranga, the city library. There鈥檚 a lot of good food and entertainment in Christchurch, and I also love hiking around the beaches and Port Hills. You get great views of the city and the ocean. These locations are easy to access without a car; I can just take a bus to get there.聽

Are you involved in any clubs or activities at UC?鈥

I鈥檓 involved in 180 Degrees Consulting, where I had the opportunity to be a student consultant for a real non-profit organisation. Through 别苍迟谤茅, I received a scholarship to go to Festival for the Future in Wellington and selected as one of the participants in the聽别苍迟谤茅 Challenge.

I鈥檓 also an appointed Vice President in the Business Taught Masters Club where I learn how to build a community, connecting both international and local students. Through these clubs I鈥檝e met like-minded entrepreneurs and sharpened my entrepreneurial skills.聽

How is your degree preparing you for your future career?鈥

My degree really helped me adapt to the finance industry. UC has great connections and is actively engaged in the industry. Throughout the career events, I鈥檓 learning the industry鈥檚 lingo, skills, and tools that are relevant to the current job market. I鈥檝e even been to the offices of KPMG, PwC, and other big companies through UC鈥檚 industry network.聽

Have you taken part in any internships or other practical experiences at UC?

I鈥檝e done two case competitions with 180 Degrees Consulting for Deloitte. It鈥檚 a great exercise to apply what I鈥檝e learned in class to a real-world setting, and it challenges my creativity and critical thinking.

I鈥檝e also participated in the Boost Your City Challenge hosted by the UCE (UC Centre of Entrepreneurship) in collaboration with PwC and ChristchurchNZ. It was a great experience to connect with other students and people from those organisations.
