Conducting research at graduate level requires students to navigate a number of different milestones. Enhancing your knowledge and skills to successfully complete these whilst developing and maintaining great working relationships with everyone involved is crucial to a smooth research journey.

HOW TO APPLY

Te Kura Tāura has developed different workshops and events that help you prepare for each milestone and understand all processes involved. Furthermore, you are able to attend sessions that specifically focus on providing you with tools and strategies for building successful working relationships.

Preparing for milestones

Doctoral Pre-Arrival Question Session

Join the Graduate School Research Student Advisors (Kaitoko) to ask any questions you have about starting your Doctoral research at UC. We can answer questions about local culture, accommodation, settling into Christchurch as well as life at UC.

Doctoral Orientation

Doctoral Orientation is a chance for new doctoral students to meet staff from Te Kura Tāura | UC Graduate School and learn what to expect in the first stage of their doctoral journey.

Kick-Start your Thesis

This is a key session to introduce new research students to the support available from Pokapū Pūkenga Ako | Academic Skills Centre, Te Kura Tāura | UC Graduate School and Ngā Puna Mātauraka Ako | UC Library.

Speakers will share top tips and answer your questions in relation to getting started with your thesis writing.

Preparing for your Confirmation

Are you wondering what to expect from the confirmation process at UC? Is your confirmation coming up soon?

Come along to this interactive workshop run by the Dean of Postgraduate Research, Professor Megan McAuliffe, and learn about all the confirmation requirements and go away with lots of useful tips and advice on how to successfully navigate this doctoral milestone!

Have you recently completed confirmation? We would like to celebrate this major milestone in your doctoral journey! Morning tea will be followed by a session going through everything you need to know for this next phase of your doctoral journey including processes, your development as a researcher and staying on top of your research project.

Working with your supervisory team

Managing your Supervisor

Working well with your supervisory team is key to a successful doctoral candidature. This workshop guides you through key aspects of managing your supervisory relationship, including expectations and processes, cultural norms and communication, feedback, support and how to manage your research timeline.


1st-Year International Scholars' Collective

First-Year International Scholars’ Collective is a monthly activity designed for international scholars in the first 12 months of their doctoral studies. Each month at the Collective scholars join their peers and facilitators to discuss a theme relevant to research students in an Aotearoa context, to share experience and tips that support their personal settlement in Ōtautahi | Christchurch and research skill development at UC, and to celebrate each other’s progress and growth.
