Starting study after a gap year

If you've taken a gap year, you鈥檒l have some unique experiences to draw on during your studies. You might also find some things a bit more challenging. Check out UC's tips for starting study after a gap year.

HOW TO APPLY
  • 鈥淢ake the most of the聽academic skills centre.鈥
  • 鈥淯niversity is not like school, no-one is going to push you 鈥 you have to rely on yourself.鈥
  • 鈥淕ive yourself time to connect with fellow students 鈥 everything evens out after a couple of months, but聽get involved in some clubs聽to make new connections.鈥
  • 鈥淒on't worry if you can't remember certain facts or equations from high school because most of this will be revised in your 100 level courses.鈥
  • 鈥淕o and talk to your lecturers 鈥 let them know you鈥檝e had a break and they will be more than willing to give you some tricks.鈥
  • 鈥淪ay yes to opportunities such as聽internships聽as they can create such cool memories 鈥 even though they might seem scary.鈥
  • 鈥淕o to class. Invest in study time. Ask for feedback. Reflect.鈥
  • 鈥淵ou probably have a whole new perspective on things after your gap year, so may view what you learn in lectures differently than other students 鈥 that鈥檚 OK!鈥
  • 鈥淕et involved in the聽.鈥
  • 鈥淏e willing to change your mind about what you want to study, and be flexible and open-minded.鈥
  • 鈥淔orm a study group 鈥 brainstorming ideas and talking about your lectures is a great way to reinforce understanding and make connections.鈥
  • 鈥淧erspective is important 鈥 focus on your successes, not just your failures.鈥
  • 鈥淢ake the most of the motivation and direction that your gap year has given you 鈥 it will help you in your studies.鈥
