International Conference on Security Alignments in the Indo-Pacific

The International Conference on Security Alignments in the Indo-Pacific was held at the University of mini传媒 on October 28th, 2022. This was the first in-person conference hosted by the Department of Political Science and International Relations where international academics were able to travel to New Zealand and attend the conference in person after the travel disruptions caused by Covid-19. The conference was co-organised by Professor Alex Tan (Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of mini传媒) and Associate Professor Nicholas Khoo (Department of Politics, University of Otago). The conference was sponsored by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) as part of the New Zealand-Taiwan Lecture Series. 1st SEARI Research Workshop: an interdisciplinary workshop on Southeast Asian Studies

Southeast Asia Research Initiative (SEARI) in collaboration with the SEA-NZ Studies Group presents our first annual postgraduate student research workshop on Southeast Asia. PhD students will present their dissertation research on the region for discussion and analysis.

The Alliance Institutionalisation: US-Philippines security relations under President Duterte

We argue that because of deep alliance institutionalisation, this security partnership is actually quite resilient despite President Duterte鈥檚 position on this issue. Brown bag seminar: The military and the monarchy in Thailand

Thursday, 15 October 2020,听01:00PM to 02:00PM, Jack Erskine Room 111

In听this seminar, presenter Jim Ockey discusses听the relationship between the military and the monarchy in Thailand and the ways that relationship has changed over time, covering the period from 1932 to the present. We will also discuss the demands, the causes, and the potential consequences of the ongoing demonstrations in Thailand under the current regime.

A brief organisational meeting for SEARI will follow the seminar.
