Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 were released today evaluating a record number of 1,799 universities in 104 countries and regions around the world.

This year鈥檚 rankings were unveiled at the听听City, where some of the world鈥檚 most influential leaders and researchers, including UC Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheryl de la Rey, gathered to discuss the future of higher education and how institutions can meet the needs of society through student success and impactful, relevant research.

SDG 4 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 - Quality Education

Professor De la Rey joined two panels at the summit, where she spoke on measures of merit and how 鈥渆quity and inclusion are a mindset, not a trade-off鈥.

滨苍听听ahead of the event, Professor De la Rey says, 鈥渆ducational institutions鈥 power to build a more sustainable, resilient and peaceful future depends on purposeful intent to advance public good and social justice. Otherwise, as history shows, educational systems can reproduce inequality, rather than close the gap鈥.

鈥淎s its 150th anniversary approaches in 2023, our institution has sharpened its focus on being a place of learning that values our differences and aspires towards research and tertiary education that鈥檚 accessible to all.鈥

Professor De la Rey says the University of mini传媒鈥檚 close and enduring relationships with听treaty partners听Ng膩i T奴膩huriri and Ng膩i Tahu are fundamental to this, and unique initiatives, including the establishment of an听Office of Treaty Partnership, K膩 Waimaero | the Ng膩i Tahu Centre,听are among collaborative progress UC is making.

Another focus heading into UC鈥檚 sesquicentennial is our commitment to the United Nation鈥檚 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They provide a roadmap for creating a more equitable and sustainable planet by providing targets for environmental sustainability, climate change action, economic growth, eradicating poverty and improving social equity.

Earlier this year, UC proved a world leader in its work towards the SDGs, placed听first in the world for SDG 12听鈥 Responsible Consumption and Production, and 50th overall in the worldwide THE Impact Rankings. UC鈥檚 number one result for SDG 12 reflects robust structural progress at UC with strong policies, consistent measuring, and comprehensive reporting on operational activities. UC also scored 11th听in the world for SDG 13 鈥 Climate Action, and 29th for SDG 15 鈥 Life on Land.
