Taking the awkward out of sexuality education

31 July 2023

A new online platform aims to bridge the gaps in sexuality education for young New Zealanders.

HOW TO APPLY

A new platform for learning about relationships and sexuality using research gathered from rangatahi has been launched by UC researcher Tracy Clelland.

Called听罢别听笔耻腻飞补颈迟补苍驳补:听Beyond the Birds and Bees,听the free platform听is a New Zealand first led by Te听Whare听W膩nanga o听Waitaha听|听University of mini传媒 (UC)听lecturer Tracy Clelland, Dr Fabian听Gilson听and Associate Professor Adrian Clark.听

UC Adjunct Lecturer Tracy Clelland says research with听rangatahi听(young people), educators and wh膩nau shows the need for a reliable research-informed Relationships and Sexuality Education (RSE) platform. 鈥淥ur work with听rangatahi听in Aotearoa continues to highlight that young people are being left to their own devices,鈥 she says.鈥

鈥淭hey told us听it鈥檚听still听difficult听to talk with parents and wh膩nau. They want the skills听to听navigate sexuality messages they find online听and to build healthy relationships.

鈥淵oung people do not want RSE left to chance, or for pornography to be the main educator. They want opportunities to discuss the gender and sexuality norms that shape their worlds and influence their wellbeing.鈥

The free online platform aims to听provide听a wide range of reliable information about sexuality, sexual听health听and relationships. It includes an app, Instagram, and听TikTok听site for young people as well as a website for parents/wh膩nau, educators and anyone working with听rangatahi.听

鈥淎 critical aspect of this platform is that it is co-constructed with young people. We hope it will be a living platform where we continually add to the content based on ongoing feedback.

鈥淥ur research has told us that if we really want to听open up听the听k艒rero听about relationships and sexuality,听we need to use a range of digital technologies. 罢别听笔耻腻飞补颈迟补苍驳补听creates a space where everyone can learn together鈥.

鈥疌lelland says while there was a small amount of funding for the听initial听stages of the project, much of the mahi has been voluntary hours by a team of people keen to deliver the RSE young people听want..听鈥淲e will need further funding and input, including feedback from anyone who accesses the platform, to continue opening up the听k艒rero听around relationships, gender and sexuality.鈥澨
