HOW TO APPLY

Cong Tran talks about his motivation to contribute to sustainable development through encouraging the widespread adoption of zero-emission vehicles. Cong Tran is a PhD student in Transportation Engineering at听Civil and Natural Resources Engineering Department听at UC. He is working on solving the problems that Electric Vehicles (EVs) cause in the transportation system due to their charging nature.

Cong completed his graduate studies in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology in Vietnam.听鈥淭hanks听to听the UC Doctoral Scholarship,听I got the opportunity to come听to听New Zealand听and continue my听research journey听in this beautiful country鈥, says Cong. 鈥淚 am听particularly interested in interdisciplinary research towards sustainable development.鈥

Cong鈥檚 primary areas of interest include urban transportation systems, network optimization, and green city logistics.听His PhD research is devoted to optimally design the locations and capacities of fast-charging听facilities听for EVs听in urban areas under congestion and uncertain demand.听鈥淎lthough the electrification of transportation in urban areas can positively contribute to sustainability in the long run, the increasing number of听EVs听in traffic networks poses new challenges through changing the traffic routing pattern and can even lead to more congestion.听鈥渟ays Cong.听

He hopes to achieve an optimization framework out of his PhD studies that minimizes听both the听travel costs and investments,听while听considering听the interaction between the听charging stations deployment and the听route choice behaviours.
