HOW TO APPLY

You鈥檙e studying towards your M膩tauranga M膩ori teaching qualification. What inspired you to choose that path?

I鈥檝e been working as a kaiawhina within different kura in 艑tautahi for the last six years. My mom gave me a bit of a tune up and told me it was about time I put in the mahi to get my teacher鈥檚 tohu. She told me about the M膩tauranga M膩ori opportunity at UC, and I鈥檇 also heard it was a cool kaupapa to be a part of.

I took her advice and jumped in, and I鈥檓 so happy that I did. It was one of the best things she鈥檚 done for me.

What do you like most about the M膩tauranga M膩ori degree?

The opportunity to have a space to practise, to w膩nanga, and to learn m膩tauranga has to take the cake for me. We learn about what it takes to be a teacher for everyone, but also specifically for tamariki M膩ori.

It鈥檚 very environment-based, so we get to go to lots of cool places and learn about the old ways, like what plants were used for, or wake up early and do karakia. It鈥檚 very hands-on, very traditional 鈥 it鈥檚 awesome.

What do you hope to achieve through your study?

My goal is to have a strong foundation in Te Reo M膩ori and tikanga, as well as improve my understanding within Te Ao M膩ori. I鈥檝e already learned heaps within the language and a lot of old, forgotten m膩tauranga. Ultimately, the goal is for us to learn these things and pass them on to kids in our classes, so they鈥檙e not so forgotten.

Do you receive much support on campus?

Absolutely. The support has been amazing, especially going into an intimidating place like university. UC M膩ori are always coming into our classes and reminding us that they鈥檙e here for us, letting us know about events. We can always pop into their offices and check in with the bros.

But it鈥檚 also university-wide 鈥 there鈥檚 help everywhere. It鈥檚 not just academic, there are things like dental care, mental health support. And if we鈥檙e not sure where to go, UC M膩ori helps connect us to the right people.

Our kaiako have created a unique tikanga and uar膩 m膩ori driven environment, which has backboned our wh膩nau/iwi M膩ori like hapori.

What鈥檚 the UC student experience like?

There are a lot of events, and I鈥檓 always encouraged to get involved. Some of us in the class are older, or have kids and families, but everyone always welcomes us with open arms. I鈥檝e joined up with the Te Akatoki M膩ori student association and go to a lot of their social gatherings, as well as some kapa haka.

Speaking of kapa haka, that鈥檚 been a pretty big part of your life!

I鈥檝e done kapa haka my whole life. I鈥檝e always loved it. My parents were a part of groups while I was growing up, and I was always in groups, both in and outside of school, and different travel groups. It's a big part of the wider Christchurch community.

There are heaps of different M膩ori communities in 艑tautahi 鈥 you鈥檝e got things like your te reo, your w膩nanga communities. We鈥檙e all connected through lots of different ones, but kapa haka is the one that binds the most of us together.

And what is the M膩ori community like at UC?

The personal connections I have with UC M膩ori mean a lot. We鈥檝e all developed great relationships. I know these people are trustworthy and feel like I can always go to them. It鈥檚 like a big聽wh膩nau, and I鈥檝e got aunties and cousins and friends I鈥檝e grown up with that all work at UC now. My brother even works at UC M膩ori. It all builds a bigger community within UC.

Do you see examples of UC鈥檚 values being lived out on campus?

100%. I see real examples of them all the time. The constant support from UC M膩ori is the epitome of manaakitanga. Within my class, we鈥檙e all very much a wh膩nau. We鈥檝e built a connection, going from strangers to family, which is a credit to our teachers for creating that environment of safety and belonging 鈥 that鈥檚 whanaugatanga. And tiakitanga reminds me of the whole UC experience 鈥 everyone doing what they can.
