HOW TO APPLY

What are you studying, and why did you choose UC?

I鈥檓 in Year 2 of the Bachelor of Teaching and Learning M膩tauranga M膩ori. It鈥檚 a very child-centred way of teaching, with a Te Ao M膩ori focus that looks at all aspects of the child and their life.

UC is the only university in Aotearoa that offers the degree in this style. There are other universities offering similar degrees, but they鈥檙e still very Western-framed 鈥 which is a big barrier in why I never had interest in university before.

How does M膩tauranga M膩ori differ from the traditional Western way of teaching, and why is it important?

M膩tauranga M膩ori is about combining all the teaching tools in a way that suits the individual. It鈥檚 has a very M膩ori world view of teaching that helps tamariki learn in ways and environments that make them comfortable, and the indigenous way of taking all of our learnings from nature.

It gives our children an opportunity to try and be who they are without getting judged or being told that they鈥檙e not smart enough because something like their writing isn鈥檛 good enough. It鈥檚 a broader, more inclusive set of tools.

There鈥檚 no shame in making mistakes or making changes. We all have stages in our lives; embrace each one. Expand yourself, and grow yourself.

What inspired you to pursue this path?

I had been a builder by trade for 17 years when I decided I wanted to change my direction in life and reconnect with my language and marae and hap奴 in Banks Peninsula. Through this, I was approached to do the degree.

When I was in school, this type of teaching approach wasn鈥檛 really a thing, and university wasn鈥檛 in my plan. I want to be the change in the world of teaching 鈥 to be a different, better teacher than some of the ones I had.

As an adult student, what is your community like on campus?

I get involved by helping UC M膩ori out with their drives, like the Matariki celebration lunch and others. It鈥檚 good to connect with younger M膩ori of UC. I鈥檓 older enough and a little bit wiser, more experienced in life, so I can offer advice.

Hanging out with them is cool because they see university in a different way, and it鈥檚 awesome to see all of these future young leaders taking the opportunities to lead in Te Akatoki and all of our M膩ori spaces, whether it is at UC, out in the community or back at their hap奴, iwi and marae.

Speaking of UC M膩ori, how have you found the M膩ori community at UC?

It鈥檚 a very tight-knit, inclusive community. They have great kaitoko that support each faculty and do a good job at engaging young M膩ori. They鈥檙e doing awesome mahi. Everyone looks out for each other, it鈥檚 like a big family. It makes everything a bit easier. It鈥檚 a beautiful support system.

Have you seen UC鈥檚 values of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and tiakitanga in action?

I see examples every day. The kaitoko always show manaakitanga in the way they want the best for us. Tiakitanga is present just walking around campus 鈥 you always see people willing to make someone鈥檚 day a bit better by helping with questions or directions. And whanaungatanga is weaved into my study, where we have all our lectures in one day so that people who don鈥檛 have the luxury of taking a whole year off from work can still study and not miss out on the opportunity.

Any advice for other M膩ori students considering tertiary education?

The first step is always the hardest. You鈥檙e always going to find barriers, whether they鈥檙e people or systems, but if it was easy, everyone would be doing it. You鈥檙e not always going to get it all right, so let yourself make mistakes.

Be proud of the journey and of the steps you take along the way. Celebrate success and celebrate your growth 鈥 big or small, growth is growth.
