What We Did

The M膩ori in engineering podcast series aims to create an accessible space for inspiration, learning and tautoko. The platform is an important space for all of us to be a part of as we shift towards a future where M膩ori voices and values are intertwined across the engineering landscape in Aotearoa. Each podcast I share k艒rero with leading M膩ori in the engineering world to discuss their stories. The podcast episodes delve into their own triumphs and tribulations as M膩ori in the engineering world.

Who Was Involved

So far, the podcasts have featured both students and professionals including Troy Brockbank, John Blyth, Teresa Poli, Jamie Pye, David Rei Miller and Luke August. Honor Columbus was also a huge support and source of inspiration. The aim is to engage with an audience at all levels from secondary student to working professionals.

Why It Matters

Our t墨puna were inherent and innovative engineers. And yet today, M膩ori are underrepresented across the engineering industry. Despite being aware of this, it can be difficult to know where to go to learn more about the issue and how we can help bridge this gap. For engineering students, it can be difficult to see how the values of te Ao M膩ori can be integrated into the industry. Similarly, for M膩ori students it can be difficult to find an avenue to see themselves reflected within the engineering industry. The podcast is a space for anyone. There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from tauiwi (苍辞苍-尘腻辞谤颈)听who may be too whakam膩 to ask in person about how to navigate this space.

After 5 months of releasing the podcast, episodes reach up to 500 listeners around the world including New Zealand, Australia, America and the United Kingdom.
